Matthew Szarzanowicz is co-founder and CEO of BasidioBio, a Berkeley-based startup using synthetic biology to revolutionize plant transformation. As an inventor of BasidioBio’s core technology—published in Nature Biotechnology—his research focuses on engineering Agrobacterium tumefaciens to enable next-generation precision, quality, and efficiency for plant transgenics and molecular pharming. He holds a B.S. in plant science from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in plant and microbial biology from UC Berkeley.
DNA delivery to plant cells underlies all of plant biotechnology—yet the process has remained inefficient, unpredictable, and uncontrollable for decades. BasidioBio modernizes Agrobacterium-mediated transformation from a legacy tool into a precise, controllable platform to unlock the next generation of plant engineering.
